About Me

Hi! I'm Pipa Teacher Nic.

I'm a professional pipa musician and teacher in Singapore. For over 20 years I've performed on stage – and taught 500+ students of every age to play with confidence.

I've performed with Chinese chamber ensembles at concerts, festivals and corporate events, and coached players from first-time beginners to serious students preparing for auditions.

Here's what I've learnt: most people don't quit the pipa because it's hard. They quit because no one shows them exactly what to fix, and how. That's what my lessons do.

  • Performer first. Stage-tested techniques, not just textbook theory.
  • Clear teacher. Complex skills broken into simple, doable steps.
  • Patient coach. Kids, working adults and seniors – I adapt to you.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Still unsure? Ask me anything on WhatsApp – I'm happy to help.

Ask a Question
Do you really come to my home?

Yes. All lessons are 1-to-1 and held at your residence in Singapore. You save travel time and learn where you'll actually practise.

I've never played any instrument. Can I still learn?

Absolutely. Many of my students start from zero. We begin with posture, holding the pipa and basic plucking – and you'll play your first simple tune early on.

Do I need my own pipa?

Yes, you'll need a pipa to practise between lessons. Not sure what to buy? I'll advise you on a good-quality instrument that fits your budget and level.

How do you prepare students for DSA?

We choose an audition piece that shows off your child's strengths, polish technique and expression, train sight-reading, and run mock auditions so the real one feels familiar.

When should my child start preparing for DSA?

The earlier the better. Ideally 1–2 years before the audition. Starting late? Contact me anyway – a focused plan can still make a real difference.

How long is each lesson, and how often?

Each lesson is 1 hour. Most students take one lesson a week for steady progress. DSA students may add lessons closer to audition season.

How much are the lessons?

Fees depend on the programme, level and your location. WhatsApp me for current rates – I'll give you a clear quote with no hidden costs.

Can seniors with weaker hands or eyesight learn?

Yes. I adjust seating, pacing and finger exercises to suit you, and can provide large-print scores. Learning music is great for memory and finger dexterity.

Can I take graded pipa exams?

Yes. If you'd like a formal goal, I can prepare you for graded pipa examinations alongside your regular lessons.
